Setting up AltspaceVR for Windows 2D

1. Before You Begin:

Check the following minimum requirements using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (Start > dxdiag).

  • Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit with Build 1809 or higher.
  • Processor: Intel i5 or higher.
  • Memory: 4000MB RAM or higher.
  • DirectX Version: DirectX 9 or higher.

You'll need at least 500MB available space. Check the available space under This PC.


You'll need a Microsoft account that matches the email address you registered with for our events.

To get a Microsoft account:
  1. Go to account.microsoft.com, select "Create account".
  2. Use an existing email address or choose "Get a new email address".

2. Install AltspaceVR:

  1. Go to altvr.com. Click the Sign in with Microsoft button. Sign in with your Microsoft account. Choose to stay signed in or not based on your preference. When prompted to "Let this app access your info?" choose Yes. Once you are signed into the AltspaceVR website, create a DISPLAY NAME (for others to identify you) and a USERNAME. Scroll down and click UPDATE. The page will refresh to show a "Profile updated" message. At the top of the screen, click the DOWNLOAD button. When the screen refreshes, scroll down to and click on the Get it from Microsoft button.
  2. The AltspaceVR app page will open on the Microsoft site. Click the blue Get button. A pop-up message will prompt you to open the Microsoft Store to complete the download. Choose Open.
  3. The AltspaceVR app install screen will open. Click the blue Get button. When prompted, choose to sign in with your Microsoft account. Approve any Windows security checks. This is for the safety of your account. After you have been authenicated by Microsoft, the Downloading and Installation process will begin. Allow up to 2 minutes to complete. You will know it is done when the blue button changes to Play. Click the blue Play button. This will open the AltspaceVR app. As it is loading, you can right-click on the AltspaceVR icon on your task bar for quicker access in the future. For best viewing, expand to full screen. When AltspaceVR has loaded, you be given the opportunity to review AltspaceVR's Terms and Conditions. To proceed, ACCEPT. You will also be given the to send AltspaceVR diagnostic data. Chose Deny or Allow as you wish. At the "Welcome to AltspaceVR" screen, choose SIGN IN. Sign in with your Microsoft account.

3. If You Registered for an Event Before Creating Your AltspaceVR Account:

  1. Let us know once you have completed the above AltspaceVR setup by replying to the registration email you received.
  2. We will email you back to confirm your registration is complete (typically within one business day) so you can continue with the next steps.

4. Access Your Events and Customize Your Avatar:

  • Click Main Menu. Click MY EVENTS. Under the My Scheduled Events tab, you will see all the events you are registered for. If you don’t see the events here, you may not be fully registered yet. Please email us back so we can complete the registration for you.
  • Click Account. Choose CUSTOMIZE AVATAR to match the look you want others to see you as.
